Quite fun...I have had a few requests this summer and have made a little bit of cash! It feels good to contribute some to the household income, especially since sewing is so FUN. So...let me know if I can make one of these for you or a friend!

First of all, it was it EXTREMELY inexpensive (~$7 on final clearance at Bed Bath & Beyond for the whole set: comforter, sham, and bedskirt). The colors are perfect, and the print is so fab.

Because it was so inexpensive, I bought three sets. The comforter has this mesh overlay that I knew would tear easily (I was right), so I thought it prudent to have an extra. However, that left me with and extra bedskirt...hmm...

And here you have the resulting skirt with matching applique tee for Rachel.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnnYV7_pgRmFeFTlxT9UId7TOCYwY5J6qKSgJjQBxEuwNMS7sBDvEEhEPcdEvs627qfdLHZWKFjo81dT5JGYz9A92eQMXGUFP2hD6jIvsrJ_Njw_LaGbnahF4ocoKw8-4c_Oz6t3MI_wbG/s320/IMG_8185.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614160748740635154" />

Carly got a sweet little shirred dress. the jumbo ric rac is the perfect accent, methinks. It was one of those too-short and too-wide size 5T deals, so I added the navy stripes, cut from an old maternity shirt. I cut it in a circle, added a rolled hem, and then did a double stitch to attach it to the hem of the shirt. I then used the donut hole to add interest to the top. Last year, I mishmashed lots (and lots) of tutorials read over the course of a couple of weeks to create the pattern for each of the girls' dresses. I liked that their dresses were the same fabric, but different patterns, so they were matchy matchy without looking uniform. This year, however, I did not spend that kind of time trying to do everything truly from scratch. While I did make my own pattern, I followed an amazing tutorial/sew-along, and I made both dresses identical, enabling a bit of an assembly line approach (much needed, being that my time and my brainspace both feel significantly more limited these days). I was intensely careful and detailed with my work this time, too, and I am happy to say that I am as proud of the inside of these dresses as I am of the outside. I finished all my seams with my awesome serger, and I picked out every seam that didn't come out looking [nearly] perfect. I loved doing a puffy sleeve for the first time, AND making/using bias tape for the first time. At the end, I decided to add the bows (which I safety pinned on so I can remove for washing). All in all, I was a proud mommy seeing my girls march along in their matching dresses (which they LOVED). Oh, and did I mention that a friend of mine GAVE me this fabric?!? Yeah, she did, and it is oh-so-perfectly Easter.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-bEvbZhFRnn6T1Bbf0ADC6g_lAhmkMgyujoP5Amk9S12Wq42mvf95WiWAxSM88_yrejYOQ_OffE4v7ffF4TQySTEt0rOWi2n9KyXNmyyXjDjtwauxrv0JhzK3a9sb2SwQZSai15v20JLw/s320/IMG_8103.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603031162052168802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7L6uPTid5cieSM_xbG-1Fr_4Jyu-Z4aX_0O5BWsb9QHYktdHjViTabrHGlN54F75S-5o5PC5eo06i6NCkgLlQe368Er8UlBTFfe0QhyTq65ONwNZpM-nPc41dy_IXokkA1BYu-87ASBiR/s320/DSC05117.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603031168279885234" />

Once I finished the dresses, it was on to my little man. No pink for him. I could not even think of using either of the fabrics to make even a tie. So I went shopping, and found the perfect onesie in the perfect shade of green, and I had a most-perfect accent fabric in my closet, from which I created a tie applique. I wanted linen pants, but didn't have enough linen in the closet to work it (just one small shirt to use), so I used an old dress of mine that was linen-like, and I cut and sewed his pants out of that. (Please forgive the crummy phone picture.)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUf24xy8z8MgCL-6c94B-jaIe5mS8aSfiFB4S0obSo0DZAsDLbJ9IS-u-DmQ-CZdD_QyGox9_f3RH64PV_s668Jd7TClnv39gQh6lz28lF7c1p_47rItdEcva_UVyXPLFArGqwqmSqLx4_/s320/0412111602.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603031165782477154" />

He was thrilled (haha)...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDcs1kKSqQrqv61fncK5u_RvffZajZqr-WbmDA5pYwnMYzX21jdvYDBDlPHyEwjbnDvabWBPyAfIT5g_DeZrg5butI99muVWLy1WeL9B1x3wIH9D-VnT6Y1_ZsGghP90YwAPphle6TKbCo/s320/DSC05284.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603031178428025298" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-84974586611047508352011-04-11T20:07:00.001-07:002011-04-12T05:12:08.690-07:0045-minute Sunday sweater
Sweet has been wanting to wear this one particular dress in her closet, but it is always too cold on Sunday morning for her to wear without a sweater. Unfortunately, the colors in the dress don't match anything she has to wear over it, and I kind of like her to match, at least when she's dressed pretty. I feel like she looks not-well-cared-for when her clothes don't match. Anyway, I felt badly about having to always say "no" to that dress, which was a gift from a friend, who is dying to see her in it and who never has, because, well...see above. So Saturday night, after saying "no" again, I decided to try my hand at remaking a hand-me-down sweater in my upcycle closet.

It started as an adult ladies turtleneck sweater. I used one of her jackets for sizing and cut the bodice, keeping the side seams intact. Then I cut up the middle of the front so that the sweater would open like a jacket. I cut the sleeves down to fit her 5T arms and then sewed them right into the new armholes. I looked at it and thought it was awfully boring, so I proceeded to shape it bolero-style by cutting up from the bottom front corners, up and around the back (hoping for it to fall right under her shoulder blades). It's kind of hard to describe, but you can see in the picture. I think it ended up a little higher in the back than would have been best, but I still like it. Anyway, because it is a true sweater (albeit a little tighter knit than some sweaters), it was a little ravely and frayish on the edges (I like to make up words), so I used a finishing stitch on my regular sewing machine all the way around, stretching it as I went to create a sort of lettuce effect. I love the intentionally-unfinished look. Finally, I added a pearl snap at the top for closure (why did I wait so long to buy a snap applicator??) and to make it fit right, but I waited until she was awake to do that so I could try it on her.

I didn't get a picture when she was wearing the dress, but here's the sweater. I'm so happy with how it turned out and definitely will be repeating this one. The best part is that it only took about 45 minutes!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNy2d9zPq3BKx5N70_vh0oYpYkCgtpYvB_aCisV72-AJ6hl2xdCLEUB4YNksaOhAjg7HF6J3rASoseFjRQCksyflJggd6GXHpscmYPbT8xsfwvQL5oo3sejeJZ94UB30pQspw4S3gU6ChC/s320/IMG_7977.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594531592283712626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOqoFcBEo_dB0l3l33Hp3p8ckoPj7nz2ezh3jF3DgEMCQm4rzWIkKRubZvb1asBhUFWWlhdNrUZCGnXEyMmx3BzJqNEXqkBbMDN1VlhVJqJMxZlndzpGRAiu-sKlZShbOKmZSvtq14r8hg/s320/IMG_7976.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594531589013221922" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixctf1wbHPGKqB3CYMrYSbvWujw6k7y_Ie829h1RWD-JIDezcWhxpyKpvzq7AMKZPB0rtCbXu9vvrmppbd1FXckesn37FjQ0DTEPy5uR3cDsu0R6ah3CpPJu5LwvYK3LSYEUCfxfM4uKwa/s320/IMG_7975.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594531583284001874" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-26682537921771003902011-04-09T09:39:00.000-07:002011-04-10T19:04:28.722-07:00baby shower gift: leg warmers, appliqued onesie, & hair poof
I have been so busy sewing Easter dresses that I barely managed to squeeze in time for a baby shower gift before the party last Saturday. But I made it! The "C" onesie...I still had 2 plain white onesies left from some I had prewashed a few months ago. The purple fabric came from a [terribly hideous] gradient-dyed, pilled, stretched, cheapcheapcheap Juniors t-shirt. I cut the "C" from the weird puffy design around the neckline. When my [wonderful] mom brought me this thrifted shirt, I seriously considered tossing it altogether because I could not imagine how I could possibly use it. But use it I did, and I think it turned out pretty cute! In fact, it kind of bailed me out. Anyway, I also bought these two pairs of knee socks at Walmart for $2 each, and used this tutorial (sort of) to make leg warmers, switching the cuffs to spice it up a bit. Then I made a little poof out of a skinny strip of tulle by gathering it around and hand-sewing it to a piece of elastic. I did end up hot-glueing a piece of felt on the back side, just to finish it off a little better and to make sure it would be comfy for baby Claire. I was very pleased, in the end!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR6Xvrk3xBS5tByJFF2mjXpRx7f8WWEwQ835Psk8kdCA61TqfnRJyyIdmRcTF32O9KoIpmcZEutKGHOv5zg7iKz7SQ3mI6Zj4CXSDYWYlnaO8yIH7n1TYDeg2dmMKGkS8q0kk1wwyQ-iDf/s320/DSCF0099.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593764067628785506" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-85432002527962509612011-02-13T10:08:00.000-08:002011-02-13T10:24:54.578-08:00Valentine's Day fun
I have been looking forward to Sweet getting to an age where she has friends with whom to exchange valentines. She's finally in preschool, so each of her eight special classmates received a handmade, hand decorated valentine from my girl. She put a lot of thought into which button to give to each of her friends, and which colors to use for their names. We had a blast working on it one afternoon, and she was excited to distribute them during her party at school.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9LMAp-9IkWZbAse1_xrjaf0I0I38nYR1nwJB2HyrYnfkXDtXEqrg3IQADZzvr3emL07dLAQ59gbxhD7scMo04M2aH7IuVK5_I6crBBByhrmxVYRGEyoYy3sF7PYC42Ap-gg0n9J7UOGwN/s320/IMG_7623.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573239783414481410" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh4UDWRVJ7M9SYID2KdWtFk6azvyqSiwDFwsoH2W7JD0TTl8_rY1pLrqX7Sz-gWjXbw3cX4KEdbq38jkpD8KjlAxONhqeBKht530n3m7eASfVgiyEhGJz_9OxNVSch8Z-vmCrOpDLMMW7Z/s320/IMG_7618.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573239785824016882" />

I also love hearts, for some reason. So I've been excited to make some cute Valentine duds for the girls. Here's what I cranked out this week!

Sweet's shirt is just a hand-me-down plain pink shirt, to which I appliqued a heart cut from a pair of thrifted heart-printed shorts. (Imagine my dismay when she put it on and it's ALMOST TOO SMALL. Stop growing, child.)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMF2hxe-Y8IKHRgBLP6QuLUXER6KWApWzXezT8zwp1OOJCQTKA66aa7H4ZUxcJvEnVXpX2yEAjL0UBFRPtm1wm35XIx0it7YtZ8zbHXWDtVklXrMawfhZA9LrdAQzfsB7aomhEc8SxY2mE/s320/IMG_7687.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573239791603397826" />

Kaboom's dress started with a thrifted size 3T (a little big, but anyway) striped turtleneck. I added the gathered skirty part from a different pair of thrifted heart shorts (why are those so popular?). The garment looked incomplete, so I opted to add the faux waistband, which is the hem from another small thrifted (and stained) turtleneck, which I cut off and sewed onto the dress. I like the crochet detail on the hem of the striped shirt, so I didn't want to cover that. I really loved the result!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpsMr6xnNb5VwFg4ghy_WOhg29cUYRXsyp5h3mTL7D-xZVRlguIucu4QO_C0xKRgeQuPi2KM39HBIVeBov5FoRAsb9nfnS5uFRA8xsOukkICFtjQ_84W34dVmabM0etImVxYdi46TOmI82/s320/IMG_7679.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573239790864178274" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-60493872965376615812011-02-01T18:42:00.001-08:002011-02-04T19:35:03.515-08:00new clothes for Sweet
I made these two outfits a few weeks ago because Sweet suddenly grew out of everything (and I mean EVERYthing). So I went into my stash of clothes-I-want-to-use-for-something and found this pair of pants I used to wear when I was a working (pre-babies). I love the somewhat sophisticated print, and the fact that they are polyester means they are indestructible--perfect for an active 4-year-old. I easily cut them down and created a pair of pants for Sweet, and then used some of the leftover to embellish one of her plain hand-me-down shirts. Easy. Quick.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5NBxz-qr-9VLjukExryMR7rPlMRXsw7mkBZIvkLFdQp_aB2iHFzHRrpupI-xEY6c07xX9i7uC8-XDuEC4hhPXDPAEM-F94XWNemWwlDriaKcR9X1QAZuos18ZOCYuhZStF0s895lUxBsf/s320/IMG_7229.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568918782285085218" />

This outfit was made entirely out of donations from my mom, who is the thrift queen (no joke). She brings me loads of really fun clothes ready for upcycling. This pair of pants came from an adult-sized pair of velour track pants (really?? yes...) and the shirt was originally just an adult-sized shirt of oh-so-plain styling. i swapped the neck with some of the velour and added the velour heart to tie the pieces together, and I could not be happier with the result (and Sweet loves LOVES this outfit). It must be fun to be 4 years old and be able to get away with such outrageous combinations of prints, eh??
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp3f7oa_e9duyAEAMFG675OFvpGczMXoIAmmsqyu9wLHbAXN11NAFcAF6hHJBQ_q_oNldF3c4msb5UJzc52_eMK4cxccBLHKfXA6JpS6bNePEtAU5-2rttlo1skEWooQasu1_eGJKuHuw8/s320/IMG_7226.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568918780326177058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwK-Yntd92jDmXO_N_0cFZo3U_iR5GGVbgSpXigGQwSnO-EBnZ3TbKAM4ctqwsv34lNO9kw8SRoheuJIBqgTpEzv7g5_tA3rW9E_ovf9KjVvETrn9YuO94uTqPp4DzVTUVIXVuFs6KnBVU/s320/IMG_7617.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570043753875911810" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-66105264747365235382010-11-04T19:05:00.001-07:002010-11-04T19:14:45.034-07:00Birthday outfit!
Boo turned TWO! Here's her outfit. The shirt was a plain shirt from the hand-me-down pile. I added the embellishments--flower made from a stretch knit that I serged to ruffle the edges. The skirt is made from some fabric I had leftover from a dress I made for Sweet when she was a baby. It's a circle skirt, and the waistband is made from the same stretch knit.
(the spots on the shirt are water from washing hands moments before the picture was taken...)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK9XW6vLjrGuRS6B2dvDJgwG5jApi-u3Mca3pbHGUMyHOoX-oBkRGjGNW1tG6KmbMhex8nAnoMtaWNj6RLboYY0ICp9ij_h5D1CifU9fnmJXlLBJRWqjLnsrLIhq8zRwvJq6GaWEwSxHhm/s400/IMG_6377.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535882975466361282" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-rmRJhW4jdv_7NS4o7aepRd5hwNjTo-epoiY_jCVl-FvtYbAgiTVzvQFxZqmWr2_feBZygEG3I_5EJIUh1naJ8MLCeOHD4kToE3SEqKhjlleJW_Rte87wdPnOrug7yS21Bhuh7ky7tZnz/s400/IMG_6376.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535882973205853410" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-36352237125485408652010-08-25T05:59:00.000-07:002010-08-25T06:05:45.697-07:00superhero capeWe had a playdate with a friend last week, and the 4-year-old boy was wearing one of his own long-sleeved shirts around his neck as a cape. Hmmm...I've kind of wanted to make a cape, but just haven't done it (my girls certainly wouldn't know what to do with it, except to turn it around as an apron), so I came home and got to work. I ended up not embellishing it too much so that he and his mom could decorate it together. This was SUCH a quick and easy project, and he was SUPER thrilled!

Thanks to this tutorial for getting me started!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTOez9LqNVSzrDJW5vERp9YW_wfwWnGjZvVZVjWZnIkhbK_QCGayXxEilEEgw30mk5v_kUKUKSQ1SDhjAGRX6eHTrbJGefJZDcMvUJ0cQ59h8AwjDD1CwAmYnorEEmX8CpSTaisfnZSi2J/s320/IMG_5612.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509331713774834642" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVqftlgzCWH31IwdQHzrCh98uM82yeyB7vhNPiDuEnQtGUE1iqvn2wjAM_JIpyW_lPbo8FIC3OybLnnuFWnj31mDuwKiT4BMb52Pc_GId2oBKOSwJnE9i4LPKteeLVCCFXmkUWOFiRNy1e/s320/IMG_5613.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509331712567535666" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ZOidg28KE6Mjreu9qUPeGh6hEINgBnT6LZRvBSpGfQ7nH0mTotbR9o5lJCuCv6TS7nZsuB3KHe_kZWl-YV9PQ5ZB-hSLnDpTqfyxXtAYl4Pbc47-Cm7Sh2GPExDCKxfpBoVHUBkUpmsR/s320/IMG_5611.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509331705403475634" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm1mss3fBKH1Q35jmaHiuDf3qlviYme5UTXDOQmyboT5VGXqUbJkUNLVxxI0NKPVs_2ISWHKWlZQgDL6qkob7wFegZMEHiwVBB5aGb7RLmEx9ktXaTbwjFIMZvJAiMo3pDgM822RaJSYM4/s320/IMG_5614.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509331697562483234" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-89221031127830560952010-08-03T19:37:00.000-07:002010-08-05T18:10:34.424-07:00proudest moment - diaper bag for Baby Boy
For four years, I've been using a very hip brown diaper bag with pink camo accents. I love it, and it has served us well.

But I can't keep using PINK camo for my Boy, can I?? It seemed like the perfect opportunity to really stretch (ha ha) my bag-making skills. So I spent a few nights reading various tutorials (I love blogs and their free-information-providing authors), and quickly decided that this one was PERFECT in every way.

That was months ago. I had the fabric. I had the notions (zipper salvaged from a worn-out sweater, strap hardware from another bag we never used). But I couldn't get started because I was extremely intimidated and afraid to work that long and hard on something that I might not like, in the end.

But I love it. It turned out great, the tutorial is the most amazing bit of instruction I've ever read, and the bag the most professional thing I've ever created.

So here it is, thanks to A Mingled Yarn!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsPzpucji7S1YXmOtIUO4L1wuQIlYE5QD31BWRLC4XVXFM9hmVVgWrJ3ocXTWvYFsdD2BRmcX_tVBpw4SPrPq15R7tMv8ZekEKapun-B5sFU7V3H3-io8BuFpCQe0Sv0cATeMkaSAl70ro/s320/IMG_5397-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501378613766747858" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpXMR2oDdtqYBdhRm4pC9hLsTeGIVjIkFNNxBdYJyuX5wfZdbN4fd23jeuCEdMrkJEbaItctUAyHMGfqfeqtNE69aXc5ADGaRF6zfMix4E0FKOHZmcWwmqAGCvAo8ji7ZDffAs-jrIwdH_/s320/IMG_5399-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501378609600230834" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvcjDokv0YDN4Brjdi45EofN5Mti_MoeXGYOtw_6ES6zLHdnH9DIYhHB7Vr8pu4WWhxqD2F1Fgv3bIxZlDeMtdbz68NZZc73uaidLMiDT3n3lDQWqrno4Ejb4_VRbW_QzlkLOzdK4Mmk3m/s320/IMG_5401-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501378601326604738" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNQySCMzbItwOUnxWpkcRFXWsUK7e_1ZkR3zreNAgrrGFTEfGUCPls2Cb4CNo3u5WJvB_Fw2SX2mkWcXw5aCAkCaHESv3t0J8uvozx2tLdZHjNPbqq-n2RuJ1U-uCnKps9zTXSxbVb2Uza/s320/IMG_5403-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501378597904270338" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-47072387368134797222010-08-02T08:52:00.000-07:002010-08-02T09:10:51.300-07:00iPod Touch pouch<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ_jlSt8ZEPFoH6x6jklyQ4lcDA9mbePt89oprivhtQjojhMc-vGWEVL8xGxRwj4wfnOD0U6RlnpFlPToqu0YaMrHXus-y2qkI_2ZFWSEB8Qja5OJKZyLeDhNoff2phGwgA1kxQ5pktXNe/s320/IMG_5434-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500841140268923266" />

Hubby recently acquired a Motorola Droid, which caused him to cast aside his [scarcely-used] iPod Touch. And so, in an effort to catch up with the 21st-century, I set out, determined to conquer and become comfortable using the hi-tech contraption.

I wanted to have something mobile and handheld that offered more options than my phone alone, and so I began toting it in my purse. But alas, I worried so that it would get scratched or, worse, cracked.

So I Googled for a tutorial, and chose this one to make my own. I have a number of discarded upholstery samples I've bought for around $1 each, and. although I love love all the patterns and prettiness, the samples are just too small to use for many projects. This one was perfect! AND, because I used upholstery, the pouch was plenty padded without adding fleece (I used a fuzzy, bulkier fabric for the lining than I used for the outside). I whipped one pouch up, just to test it out and make sure the measurements and everything worked out. I'm glad I did that, because my first run was too snug and about 1/4" too short for my iPod. I adjusted a few times and finally found the perfect size for my final draft. I also cheated on the closure and used the tip of a canvas strap I had in my stash, which was the tie I had saved from a bundle of tiny throw pillows I bought at Pier One years ago. Yay for never throwing anything away!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH06jrBu6oAe1Ytl1ilKnPxQtbY2itmaetrh_Sd9zXogYVQBSKuDbEIrENzUqjcAYIXzn1MIdcGEO9dz_1J26J7kQ3VEm2MXVU-zl2IxxSti7V636eIDunRstzKg__DDiWSBxyrh-LTqZm/s320/IMG_5432-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500845340195026834" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-33142016199610368992010-07-30T19:12:00.001-07:002010-07-30T19:20:17.902-07:00old news... tee shirt to dress recon
This dress is a recon from early in my sewing-clothes-from-clothes days. I made it last summer, but Sweet has refused to wear it until last week (she declared it "tickly" without even trying it on). Last week, she wore it two days in a row...go figure! The body of the dress is a thrifted shirt I bought several years ago (it's an awesome find, if you know our family). I repurposed the original ribknit neckline to be the snugger top edge of the dress. The straps and ruffle are from a $1 Kmart clearance shirt I bought last summer (I bought quite a few different shirts on the same day, and they have been so lovely to have in my stash).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgui_khTFsQC8XfKQPEfJumjTymClfjSlM6u7gpAcOBrN4hBXzL9VOpULk1Gd-_VxGM6qMo2hyZs_npEJrYEmdsxiquNEMdgSSpTuDY7mlVY1_eHOR_LowquzxU9DjP2IXAy2eMw7vPag0/s320/IMG_5305.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499887889264287666" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEMkDpy7AwvmjU-7W_NIUBr8gsyfn3NTC5kgplg53ANxTB-wIDz_IDDT1x2loL3QeF-eOoxWAEYaCeaDyQ1l-M3u9xkxmohVGNpzVqxpMlUUiysyvbvs9hH5219iSpXS4RvD1QDl4FhWK5/s320/IMG_5317.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499887896698364994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 262px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBULl9vThoiuxdxMn0CLhi_JkK7dHLuQOvKGwI7-eHgOozV_tw5pktOUSsuAT5qFSTT9xVNE8vLCa8qwJtdYStoBOrj6LLS52mcPHv3PvTcsbevN6jgdBICx5b5PQjvO_8k1af7F7n4f5y/s320/IMG_5314.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499887895145728946" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-24371144628306818802010-07-18T18:56:00.000-07:002010-08-02T08:34:08.001-07:00Chick-fil-A Cow Appreciation DayIt was over a week ago, but I happily worked the entire week creating cow costumes for the girlies...

Sweet's costume started as an Adult size Medium (or was it Large?) tee shirt, pleated at shoulders to make it fit better while keeping the fluff, elastic added to bottom hem and sleeve hem. The black spots on hers and Boo's costumes are cut from a discarded black tee shirt.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLP5QerZyoCqznDUJYxnsW_E4mQ4YcpIsAWIsVZ2u2P28oQmnLsqc7rNliZW_CzY5FAiFa2Gd1cuEssuOyflnXUPFWI-nMrvThdJtEMbCK8g4Rg87lnYoOC55aX1lCyRVMMVW0sVQ3Wlwy/s320/Copy+of+IMG_5189.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495430858928756370" />

Boo's costume started with a too-big Toddler tee to which I sewed black spots. I then made leggings using one of her existing pairs as a pattern, and, of course, a spare tee shirt. I cut the pants so that the bottom hem of the tee became the bottom hem of the pants. I was udderly (haha) proud of myself that I thought to sew on the spots BEFORE assembling the pants (that is something to brag about with my current state of mind). BONUS: Baby Boy should be able to wear this one, or at least part of it, on some future Cow Appreciation Day.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu1c7k5IkOE8Vi7jsT20p6lBJxdK1ulRB35SKGe200mdcg4Khr3eO6T5ho50Wz04lOeGGlTTl9bjebyyCwFayVu_4RZchqu9k07HMomp1mPVcQ5dK0pK0Sf-KyJy2KegTqpKRvvSnlHzF1/s320/Copy+of+IMG_5221.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495430863294369458" />

Here's a tail shot. I had a long, white, nylon string leftover from cutting a drawstring short on another project (I've had this in my stash for...probably 3 years?) that made the most wonderful cow tail. I clipped and unbraided the ends, melting the nylon just above the shredded part, and then used a black Sharpie to color the ends. I pinned these to their costumes so I could remove them before washing.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9aC-yzWhWZTK9pSwkW0NNyySJdlhTgI4_Z0bgM8w-dBQunN_-hLySETDxrJHDFw9m2pdTDkcjcLHZ8jM0rK2H749cYzztHL26bsh-Ln5tcBAha8c_s9r8vu8xA-0JowHxWqgNMQinOWAG/s320/IMG_5222.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495430870670814802" />

Thankfully, both my girls L-O-V-E the gigantic Chick-fil-A cow mascot. The whole day was immensely more exciting that Halloween, and the process and objective for this project were pleasant deviations from the usual garment sewing for my babies.

All in all, it was one of my more successful sewing ventures to date. I didn't have to rip even one seam, and everything turned out exactly as I envisioned it. I'm getting much more patient with my crafting, which makes a much nicer end product (go figure) with significantly less frustration.

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-63819163170357770042010-07-04T17:14:00.000-07:002010-08-02T09:11:24.828-07:00catch up post...
Sweet's #4 birthday outfit! Boo doesn't have much in the way of summer clothes. For playing, she has just a few short-sleeved shirts, two pairs of capri pants, two play dresses, and a couple of dressy dresses. The weather has been up and down, and we don't go out and about a lot, so it hasn't been a big deal at all (incidentally, a friend has promised me some hand-me-downs; we just haven't had a chance to connect on that yet).

I mentioned before that she's been potty learning, and Boo has subsequently been running around in tees and undies almost every day. Of course, dresses are ideal for this, but she has more tees than dresses...

All of this lead me to this little project. I had an Adult Medium purple tee in my stash of things-I-should-reconstruct, so I just hacked off the bottom, gathered it, and sewed it to the hem of one of her cutesy little summer shirts. Not satisfied that the design was coherent, I made a little rosette (first time for that!) and attached it to the seam. She was genuinely thrilled, prancing around in her "new" dress, and I was satisfied to A)have created something, and B)see Boo in a dress instead of looking half-naked in just a tee. It was a real win-win. And besides, who doesn't love a little girl in a summer dress??
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkfk3e3HcvCm__CuIr5MOYzDfc1FQubnrh3WZy8lhMqVvZBpcajEgnsSvkdHDvNDrn9zvWJIgpOoEand0fvuQfZp8MVU03r81-Z8eZHw7xrj-WDiUiEqqphuHBeAYaKkaxYtFlabOiRouj/s320/Picture+162.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470189063670565346" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6V-2B5BZ3lBYTTZl0VOlcKkm_BNlMwCuhyphenhyphengU7a-JvUh5UogbJ8esHpxWhSGcG3JHc96G8G8NJNMT4yMee7QPZuZsMd4hnxQl7zSEU6tSqbmM3ahK2PfMHpBmzrWEy6kd4JOt2I_G26o8v/s320/Picture+158.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470189069003947090" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTKiCq9z5tyIb7EbeLDcKd1XPgckOk18Uw70ah5m_9XWVDiGCigGz_EMNed0fHHoVJvB4Ru3bMhBDqSS_rgSgsrCW8CWlqn_my-9SeAgAx2fnPxFbqqG_F9gZW-l7HUPofudqoh3E22-_h/s320/Picture+144.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470189053593675298" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-87730061550188513832010-04-29T04:07:00.000-07:002010-05-12T04:44:59.579-07:00more shirring goodness - shirred summer dress
I had this almost-perfectly rectangular piece of remnant from a yard of fabric I bought long ago to embellish burp cloths, and I thought it would be perfect for trying out a shirred dress from scratch. Boo is in need of summery clothes, and dresses are great for our potty learning experience right now, so I whipped this dress up soooo fast. I also did my first blind hem on my machine, and it worked out great, too! It's a little big on her yet, but it works, AND it means it will likely fit her next summer too. Overall, I love the colors on her, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcJ_4-UQvnQI4TeZ3J40iGuU2GkFp4OsoFJ25ubksHza2rWzH_q5D3HWp5uZwUzg0Aexzxr9UWjvDWswU5bt1nRTUvJh03dBIMs9DLw4aluhuDItP9oXkF8Uh5AyWSgUUzPcw-x2bLQvlU/s400/IMG_4769.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465514577270634562" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-73702894152125070342010-04-25T18:59:00.000-07:002010-05-12T04:45:36.649-07:00twirly - tee shirt and adult skirt to girls dress
This is a dress I made for Sweet a few weeks ago out of a stretched-out, too-short, hand-me-down tee + the stripes from some worn-out, hand-me-down Adidas pants + a second-hand skirt I never wore. Sweet LOVES it because it's 'twirly'. This is the dress she begs to wear every day, even though I don't think it was my best effort. Once I figured out that my machine has a unique stitch for shirring, I was all set.

I've been waiting for warmer weather to make this colorful tie-dye tee into a dress for Sweet (my almost-4-year-old), a la made. Genius idea for which I cannot take credit, but I love the result.

It did take me a few days to convince Sweet to wear said dress. She was sure it was "tickly," in spite of the fact that she hadn't tried it on. But, finally, one day, when it was her idea, she wore it. I actually went to JoAnn fabric store and BOUGHT brand new fabric for these. I intended to also buy patterns, thinking perhaps I could learn something if I tried to follow a pattern. However, patterns that involve anything complex are ridiculously expensive, and I just couldn't do it. So, after perusing my favorite blogs and googling everything I could think of, I made these dresses, using several brand new techniques...and, hey, I did learn a few things (or a LOT) by the end!
<img style="display:block; After washing, the edges look nicely ragged. I LOOOOOVE it, and it was really fast and easy. The best part is that I started with clearance shirts from Old Navy...$1.74! You can't beat personalized birthday presents for $1.74. The 'L' is for Lyssette, who also received a cutie tutu, and Brighton got a pair of pants made from the sleeves of a sweatshirt that never fit me quite right.

But the following is my fav-fav-favorite. I started with a hot pink shirt (like Carly's 'C') but I didn't want to do a grey E for my girly little niece Emma. SO, after much thought and consideration, I decided to use a fuzzy black velour-type fabric for her E. I had already finished all the other shirts...this was the last one...and I messed it up. On the final stretch of the 'E,' the whole thing got caught in my machine and ripped a hole in the shirt. When surveying the damage, I noticed that the whole thing turned out wonky (that velour has a lot of stretch...hmph). So back to Old Navy I went, not hopeful at finding another shirt, since they were mega-clearance to begin with. But what I found opened the door to a beautiful little outfit of which I am proudest, to date. I used the back of the messed-up pink shirt as my contrasting fabric. Then, I noticed that a skirt I've had in my stash for awhile, waiting to be repurposed, was the perfect shade of over-dyed denim to create a little matching skirt for baby Emma. I hacked it up and considered how to create it, when the faux wrap presented itself as an option. Serging the edges with contrasting-but-coordinating thread gave it that unfinished-finished feel, but it still seemed incomplete. And so I embarked on my first-ever embellishment, which fringed nicely in the wash. Still not satisfied, I decided to attempt leggings for the first time ever, as well. The sleeves of the pink shirt were perfect for a 3/4 length style, but I did have to piece together scraps from another pink shirt to have enough for the leggings...I'm super happy with the cuteness of the extra stripes on the bum. I sewed it all together to make one-piece, so the skirt stays rightly-oriented on our wiggly sweetie, and, VOILA! hands down, my favorite project yet!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYGPLVYW5KsxB_IMEjsALIvrGeHnYGW_-_wSCJpnTLyXLa3jE8LcQFM6pT-4AJVB7M_1YwID1YG0vvKcVh-0KxGzKfvEfeasxfDgQ5bPjYOALXhtgNsmuQqXt_Bb3JzEyenisO5JvQgBE/s200/IMG_4085.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446483205587159842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIUpQFEUNJ5ohEo5_V5FnOA-GahLYJ3jwQdJVT_PHlF3dSN_RINPoKapHuHs5oDIkxqzFOnaqRZg6lzsM_Pyn3fTZJ3mSi0oy9PG91HJmg-Inv6qa-FrkZLavl8vd8v8pFpMwmuF6Vfqg/s200/IMG_4098.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446483214942610882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTp585OJ4pzQcNefLSjvLq0cKVaIWcYgOarXwVihqlL7Fh0FGl77zS4OG4Eb7thLZashvFxqHG7Zxe6TfaZTPGYIKGUzdq2Nftd9qjmz2biK7r7ZILtzgHTUARxk4kC0moNVvyFI6Yjl4/s200/IMG_4093.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446483227798924610" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4zepXheR4pgy81kKG8TMxrLz2U6UHFd_qQMTYfoMEJSSLiLO-vKj3UFbRv5hkSmeOA4Do6mEZgwq8bkcnjWLQLW56rdM1TAWvtqDuCdZM1wEzrZLEkYROt7DJWt7m3B6BdLUMQYr054/s200/IMG_4254.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446483217797773106" />

AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2723731261431775198.post-69876093061540573932009-12-27T19:31:00.000-08:002010-04-25T19:06:56.098-07:00the end of a season
I believe I am returning from my longest-ever blogging hiatus. I've had a few topics bouncing around in my mind, but never made it to the computer with the expressed purpose of recording said topics. For now, suffice it to say that we've been extremely busy, in more ways than one. Of course, Christmas is a busy season for all of us, isn't it? My wonderful husband's dedication to building us from debt to wealth (thanks, Dave Ramsey!) really freed my stress this year. I decided to make as many Christmas gifts as possible, to get done what I could manage without gaining extra grays (where are all these gray hairs coming from??), not spend an excessive amount of money on people who have everything they need and most things they want (like ourselves), and to let the rest sliiiiiiide. And as a result, for the first time in many many years, Christmas was fun. I love giving gifts--truly--but I hate the artificial pressure of our artificial celebrations during such a sacred, REAL season of what should be the most genuine and humbling of celebrations.

Rachel is 3 1/2 now, and she understands so much. How do you teach a kid that this a season to GIVE, not get? I told her every chance I got. I helped her make gifts for a few of her most beloveds--her grandparents and her daddy. But everywhere we went, people asked Rachel what she wanted for Christmas, what was Santa going to bring her, and if she had been "good enough" to get STUFF. Stuff, people...really?? That's what it's all about?

I have never reflected on the toy drives that occur during this season. We are encouraged to make Christmas happen for families who can't afford to "do" Christmas the way Christmas should be done (apparently). I have never, until this year, considered the implications therein. What is Christmas?? Is it a time when it's okay for kids to be greedy? Who are we, that we can "make" Christmas for people? The very beauty of Christmas is that it is available to everyone, no strings attached. There are no people who cannot experience Christmas. Christmas is nothing, if it is not free and available to all.

I don't mean to downplay the mercy ministries that happen during this season. After all, as we reflect on God's mercy in sending the greatest gift to us on Christmas day (or somewhere around that, anyway), how could we not respond by extending similar mercy to those among us who are without? But this is the first year that it struck me that it is all vanity if we don't proclaim the name of Christ and communicate God's ultimate gift to us. All of our mercy-giving and gift-giving, even among our families and close friends, is vanity without Christ.

Jarrad and I are very blessed with families who seem to genuinely enjoy blessing us with good gifts during this season. We hardly feel the need (and nearly feel guilty) purchasing gifts for our own children because of the volume of gifts given them by others who love them so. We would never want to take the joy out of that. But I can definitely say that I'm at a loss for how to help my children understand that receiving gifts is absolutely at the bottom of the list of important-things-that-happen-in-December. I do think we'll start by trying not to allow our children to get caught in the "gift race," wherein one finds oneself trying to guess who will spend how much to buy which gift for me so that I can do my best to match, if not exceed those gifts by giving equal, if not better gifts in return. I shook that this year, as I've been most guilty in the past.

Okay, okay...I promise I'll do a fun post soon about all the stuff the kids got for Christmas. In the meantime, here are a few of the gifts I created for our loved ones this year:

An outfit for my nephew, from a pair of my cords I never wore (the pants are a tad too small for him...sad!)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiThdpxhIeBlzgu2FkcygbEQEY_LIbGGwzxK5goDZ_PSdF5XEeUefqz5yNkjtI2YbfjwsNOBMle36x6IR4L_i8didpOhqZiYyP8Jv13p1bTX4RUnZq0K21x196H-ZSwwIf1Ge1MzHtKEXY/s320/IMG_3213.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420136221788962514" />
key fobs! I tried a few times in the past, but never got into it. But I have discovered that I just don't think it's fun to cut into a pattern and turn it into a garment. What I DO think is fun is to look at fabric and create something from it. And so, after wading through several tutorials online, I have found bits and pieces of inspiration all over my house.

My first recycle project was a t-shirt reconstruction. Rachel and I participated with some friends in the Walk4Hearing a couple of weeks ago. My friend Carla had special t-shirts made for our team: Team Turtles. Rachel's adult small was, needless to say, too big. So I turned it into a dress...fun!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzM-Tq4nP1Ya0w4BJXY0tuen85Qaoyhq-VzrRuFbKsz6aW4Jn-jYG6OeNXRmMC9O7tAu1_NYrjFgd1lfb-BCFFCK-OOpCrye0GEIqziIobb9AaoT1C0qlwPrXxEg3BsJTZvnWZF5IQwvM/s320/IMG_2271.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392066239744617826" />

I used one of Rachel's existing dresses as a guide, cut the original shirt down to that size/shape, and sewed the side seams. I then took one of my discarded ribbed tanks and cut out sleeves and a ruffle for the bottom of the dress. I made the ruffle by pulling the fabric as I ran the edge through my serger. I used the bottom hem of the ribbed shirt for the sleeves so that the edges were already finished, and I ran one straight stitch with elastic bobbin thread to give the sleeves some poof. I also ended up having to put darts in the back because the dress needed more shape and still looked really big on her.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RB3EQ1_KmvhIr4LSjpdcrhCuiMc27WP4YTeJhhAoGAJ8vFIfYPj1Q_4cLsyrnWrIMV8zG1CyOzuusRo6y5uUDHBby9qsZtN-DTlUKktg23Q5V_jL5luVBf0iJOMSefbMMx8yYLzv2FE/s320/IMG_2400.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392066247218579282" />

I had so much fun doing that, that I decided to recon some others of my discarded clothes.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1B9UlpKaXkhl9Zk9f90NQwgPB2WUdNVzX5Y5dneZ6zheIxmjuUoKb6vrg-nJpn9na3t_K7yc1pdHIIdPjVxJK4B2yJlmFG4H4I3fwrBz_QioGIrGGfxSiy4GSBJnJeQBShaUsVX8BAsM/s200/IMG_2482.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392073127145576354" />
I had this striped long sleeve tee that I LOVED the colors, but never loved the shirt itself. So, per tutorials I found online, I cut the sleeves and made them into a little pair of pants for Rachel. It was SO easy that I couldn't resist trying to use the rest of the shirt, too. However, not wanting the outfit to be overwhelmed by stripes, I dug through our giveaway pile and found this plain brown shirt that I used to love. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHPLYF1llhtb9bgCR2uK2naWiy2Nr1ra2FO0CvPbiqZ7zDGbtl7xJ_bYdaJ-XqZQ5jIaPcwPWNoe6onq2gRr2VbbWYHi5NfB-jnWSMNX5RxA9kxj-BjjrwcSXp3BN-fCpM1INm3XsiF_0/s200/IMG_2500.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392073508415571794" />
Armed with scissors and a newfound interest in gathering and shirring, I cut a bodice from the top of the striped shirt and sewed it to the gathered bottom of the brown shirt...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3iVqvnYOpEvr2KRGC8q-TF3xKfL-j_2MLuAxhNWaCT_PZ1ueibxdHU5ouL4VItBqJlbDIu73Is9Hx9JNXS6ZKVJrDNFVbQI8JleDRsVp9W3JQ08KJUIXMRGygxBwJHq3xuAJ3ePO86A/s320/IMG_2502.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392074099307977090" />

Clearly needing sleeves, I employed the sleeve portion of the brown shirt, also adding a line of elastic for fluff. But I'm trying to remind myself that we have a little time to take it easy before she arrives, and to be grateful for every second of peace and quiet I have for now. It's going to get crazy any day now! I am terribly uncomfortable, and I am really anxious to meet our little girl and give her a name, but other than that, I really cannot complain. I have been blessed with two uneventful pregnancies, and I am so thankful for that!
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 126px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigHl69Z7tb-FaRa16zRA6M8Dh1cR57UG8dsH3jzXkpx834ZlwD60WNDRZAYtDgwTkE3xJwO2KmCnhpgJh7rsOwtnZNJoxBaqDBTA19nf16ri7E0AurYMPFb4zVt5uzeXw_Pw80EXTLgRI/s200/HPIM6127.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263853423602025874" />
One of the bonuses of Baby Sister still being in her cushy little home is that I got to go to the mall for Trick-or-Treating with Daddy and Rachel. It was going to be a special Daddy-Daughter night, and I was planning to be home with Baby, but we got to go as a family instead! It is unfortunate that Baby has two very cute Halloween bodysuits that she won't get to wear, though. At the suggestion of a friend, I dressed her up anyway. We got lots of points and chuckles. Rachel was Little Red Riding Hood, and her best friend Wolfie was her Big Bad Wolf. I checked out a really simple (and not-scary) version of Little Red Riding Hood at the library this week, and we've been reading it every day. Rachel was very excited to get dressed up, and even agreed to TWO ponytails like Red Riding Hood has in the book. On a side-note, I was very proud of myself for making the basket liner to go in her Easter basket for her costume

I took Rachel to the mall last year and she had such a fun time. I didn't remember it being too terribly crowded, but I remembered terribly WRONG. It was a mad-house! We will not be doing that again. I guess I failed to consider that 16-month-old Rachel stayed content sitting in front of the candy store sorting a big bucket of gum, and then helping hand out candy the whole night. We never even ventured into the big part of the mall last year. It was almost unnerving how crowded it was this time. I was very thankful to have Jarrad there!

On the pregnancy side of things, I will be going back to see the midwife on Monday. They will give me some sort of stress test to be sure it's safe to continue. I think 42 weeks is the max they will let me go, and then they will try one drug-free option to get things started before ultimately sending me to the hospital to be induced with Pitocin. I will be really out-done if I end up in the hospital to have this little girl. I have been looking forward to trying a water birth and being in a home setting, letting my mother-in-law catch the baby, and just generally being supported in a different kind of way. I am trusting God that she will come how she comes, though, and I'm trying not to get stressed out about it...anxiety can't possibly help move things along.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihS6sYutL2fwxeEsRr2fDRqbOTpW3Tl88OJyDXcroV6hY3xfj6c5hdjXRHnT8ifoa9lGFRPwGVEavapszFrXXhboU0ijmmOCzwv34tnkN0nzGpCoq_QkVgqTDpJ-BUYwZpyZ_DnWSDsEQ/s320/HPIM6115.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263854148128742802" />AnniePathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00886128930249311709noreply@blogger.com2
